COMPARATIVE CRIMINAL LAW

Analyze the notion of crime (theory of offence) in the civil law tradition.

Analyze the mental element in the crimes regulated under the Rome Statute of the

International Criminal Court.

Find a case dealing with a Criminal Law or Criminal Justice issue in the United States

(Supreme Court). Identify and analyze the following aspects of the case: (i) the facts; (ii) the legal issue; (iii) the rule (Where did the rule come from? A case? A line of cases? Legislation?); (iv) the analysis followed by the court (i.e., reasoning method, analogies, metaphors, use of precedents, reference to publications, logical structure, etc.); and the conclusion (logical structure, if any). If possible, also identify the holding and obiter dicta.

Analyze an offence, such as homicide, assault, theft, etc., of the criminal code of a jurisdiction influenced by Soviet law.

Choose one of the cases decided by the International Criminal Court or currently under consideration of the ICC and explain it.

Law aspect of a legal tradition other than common law and civil law. Briefly summarize it and compare it to the common law tradition.

Find a newspaper article dealing with a Criminal Law aspect of a legal tradition other than common law and civil law. Briefly summarize it and compare it to the common law tradition.

Discuss international, US, and Canadian legal measures to deal with child sex tourism.
