Scientists and economists are warning of the major effects climate change
will have on people. Large areas of south-east England, including London,
will be at risk from flooding. People may have to move from these areas.
Rather than spend money on central heating, we may need to install air
conditioning in our homes. Farmers will have to change their farming
methods. Glasshouses might no longer be needed for growing crops like
tomatoes. Countries such as Greece may become too hot and dry for vines,
but England may become a major wine producer. Our eating habits may
change to a more Mediterranean diet based on pasta, olives and vegetables.
As a result, we may become a healthier nation, saving the Health Service
money. We might be able to grow grapes in Galloway, but we will also
have to spend a lot more money on repairing flood damage.
