Paper instructions:
A company has contracted with you as an expert to choose a developmentally appropriate
curriculum for its employer-sponsored child care center. Remember, the group of people that you
are preparing this for do not have degrees in early childhood/child development. Write the paper
from an administrator’s perspective. When writing this paper, it is important that you
assume the role as “expert”. Pretend that you are trying to provide a case for curriculum
development and implementation at their program for children. Do NOT assume that the
person reading your paper has the same specialty knowledge that you have (they can talk
the “lingo”, etc…) Use of scholarly publications will be necessary and expected. This
will substantiate your choices and ideas. The paper will be a total of 10-12 pages of
content.
Section I-Curriculum Theoretical Perspective:
In this section, an overview of what constitutes a developmentally appropriate curriculum
from a theoretical perspective is investigated. Access of research or scholarly sources
(NOT internet sites) will be necessary to support this section which can include your
textbook. A minimum of at least five (5) research/scholarly sources should be utilized
and reflected in this section. Resources accessed will be cited in-text and a complete
listing at the end of the paper will be provided on a reference page using APA 5th edition
writing style.
Section II-Choice of Curriculum and Program Implementation
From the administrative perspective, describe in detail what an administrator must
consider when choosing a curriculum. Include what strategy an administrator must take
to arrange the environment and systems to bring people together around shared interests,
curiosities, and reflections regarding curriculum choice and implementation. Describe
how the administrator will facilitate interactions, connect staff with one another, mediate
conflicts, and scaffold learning for staff. Include information that describes how
curriculum choice is based on professional standards and how children’s individual
outcomes are considered. A choice of certain curriculum(s) should be listed in this
section, but should not be the entire focus. Your reader is most interested in
understanding the process of consideration when choosing, developing strategies, and
implementing curriculum. A minimum of at least three (3) research/scholarly sources
should be utilized and reflected in this section. Resources accessed will be cited in-text
and a complete listing at the end of the paper will be provided on a reference page using
APA 5th edition writing style.
Section III-Connecting Your Practice and Curriculum to State Guidelines
Utilizing the State Guidelines for the state in which you live (if your state is without
guidelines, utilize Illinois’s State Guidelines) and based on the curriculum selection(s),
explain how the program will make the best use of these guidelines but still remain true
to best practices, to the needs of young children, to the philosophy of Developmentally
Appropriate Practice, and to doing what’s right for children. Consider using the question
framework provided in your Gronlund text (pp. 5-6) and cite the text and other sources
used to write this section. A minimum of at least two (2) research/scholarly sources
(which includes your textbook) should be utilized and reflected in this section. Resources
accessed will be cited in-text and a complete listing at the end of the paper will be
provided on a reference page using APA 5th edition writing style.
Section IV-Curriculum and Child Assessment
Discuss and support a rationale for how the program and staff will collect data regarding
children utilizing assessments and how this data are aggregated and used for curriculum
planning. This includes considerations of staff conducting formal observations of
children, assessment tools with established reliability and validity, and/or maintaining a
portfolio of individual children’s work. A minimum of at least three (3)
research/scholarly sources should be utilized and reflected in this section. Resources
accessed will be cited in-text and a complete listing at the end of the paper will be
provided on a reference page using APA 5th edition writing style.
Section V-Connecting Families and Community with Curriculum
Describe strategies that would enhance family and community involvement with
curriculum. A strong feeling of community within and outside of a program comes from
meaningful connections people have to each other. Consider all of the strategies that an
administrator can help people get more connected to each other to support program
curriculum.
