The Malayan Emergency as seen through the eyes of a British soldier.

The Malayan Emergency as seen through the eyes of a British soldier.   History 241: War in the Modern World II, spring 2013 Paper #1: The Malayan Emergency as seen through the eyes of a British soldier. Due: Monday, April 29, 11:00 p.m. – a paper of 750 to 1000 words (that’s roughly 3-4 pages) on the topic described below. Paper are to be submitted on Blackboard in the submission box provided for in the Paper #1 folder (in the “papers and quizzes” content area). References: since we are all using the same texts, parenthetical short references are good enough. Thus,
“We followed him up the track and into the jungle.” (Miers, 142)
Or: “Templer’s strategy implemented greater coordination between military and civilian branches.” (Nagl, 84) The topic: I have posted part 2 of Richard Miers, Shoot to Kill (London: Faber and Faber, 1959) (it is posted in two files for ease of download). This is an account of one battalion’s efforts to eliminate a company of insurgent forces during the Malay Emergency.
The assignment is to compare this account “from below” with Nagl’s description of the Templer’s strategic initiatives (an account “from above”).
Does Miers’ account support Nagl’s arguments? More specifically, does Nagl’s description of Templer’s strategy correspond to what we see implemented by Miers’ battalion? Does Miers’ account offer evidence in support of Nagl’s larger argument regarding the “adaptability” of British forces and/or the eventual British victory? How so? Finally, do you think that Miers’ account illustrate important aspects of the war which are left out of Nagl’s account?
There are any number of possible responses to these questions. But I would be inclined to organize the paper in ascending order: Templer’s strategy; this strategy as implemented by Miers’ battalion; the extent to which Miers’ “account” matches Nagl’s analysis; and conclude with anything vital that you think you learned from Miers.
